The Geometry of Faces: How to Blush and Bronze For Your Face Shape

Are you a square, round, oval, or a heart? What is your face shape?

Yes, every person out there is unique, however, the basic shape of your face likely falls into one of four categories - square, oval, round, and heart shaped.

Each shape is beautiful and creates different angles, but because of the shape of your underlying bone structure, each face shape needs to be treated differently, especially in the application of blush and bronzer.

Contouring your face is an awesome way to amp up your routine and get glamour gorgeous, and each face shape can achieve beautiful contours, but each requires a different method.

For square faces, apply your bronzer in a sideways triangle next to your ear and apply your blush to the center of your cheeks.

For oval faces, apply your bronzer in a sideways triangle just below your cheekbone and apply your blush in a horizontal rectangle on top of the triangle of bronzer.

For round faces, apply bronzer under your cheekbone in a sideways triangle and apply your blush in a horizontal rectangle on top of the bronzer.

For heart faces, apply blush in a sideways triangle and apply your bronzer underneath that in a horizontal rectangle.

You see I've given a lot of thought as to the best way to enhance your features, which for me is probably your eyes, your cheekbones, and your mouth. Your blush and bronzer are best when used to make your eyes sparkle, to make your cheekbones stand out, and your mouth look the sexiest. I'm sharing with you my secrets for how to apply your blush and bronzer to make you the most gorgeous, glowing you.

Why Using Toner is Important!

We all have our daily facial routine. Some of us go with the pure basics of washing and if we feel dry, add some moisturizer.  Some of us go a little further and use serums and some of us are wise to exfoliate.  No matter what side of the facial routine bridge you stand on, you are probably looking for your skin to be different and better.  Maybe your pores need to be tighter, maybe you are still oily after washing, maybe you are super dry after washing.  Using a toner can help with all of these issue and more.  Toners have the amazing capability of correcting your Ph balance, tightening your pores, removing any left over traces of makeup and/or dirt after cleansing, helping the moisturizers and serums penetrate deeper into your skin, refreshes and awakes your skin.  If you have skin feeling like the Sahara Desert then choose a toner that is full of humectants and not an astringent, like a rosewater based toner or our Faces Beautiful Hydrating toner would work wonders for you!  If your skin is more on the oily side even after you cleanse then you may want something along the side of our Faces Beautiful Papaya Enzyme Toner or Peter Thomas Roth Conditioning Tonic.  There are so many different toners to choose from, make sure you are choosing the best one for your skin type!

How Your Brow Shape Effects Your Face

Let's play a game of good brow, bad brow.

If I'm a bad brow, I might be too thick or thin, too far or too close to the nose, I might have had the wrong hairs removed, or I might not have a sexy tail. Oh how sad!

What results do I give? I might make you look angry or sad, worried or surprised, I might even make you look droopy or older than you are! My general result is less attractive than you deserve!

On the other hand, if I'm a good brow I'm going to be tailored not only to your face shape, but also to your individual asymmetry.

I'm going to make you look younger, fresher, more well rested, and generally sexier.

I'm the brow you deserve, and I'm the brow you're going to get at Faces Beautiful!

Here at Faces Beautiful we strive to give you the best eyebrows for your face. We look at how your face shape and asymmetry effect your brows naturally and then we tweeze to bring out the best shape from your natural brows.

Give us a call at 203-226-1818 and book your appointment for an eyebrow shaping today!

We can't wait to see you!

Hydra Pure Oil-Free Moisturizer by Dr. Thomas Gross

Another recommendation by our Esthetician Kate...

Even woman who have oily and acne prone skin need a moisturizer! But which one is best for you? I really love the Hydra Pure Oil-Free Moisturizer by Dr. Dennis Thomas Gross. This moisturizer is  lightweight and quick-absorbing, which helps the product penetrate deeply into your skin to restore your younger skin. This moisturizer repairs your skin with chelators, antioxidants and peptides which will help reverse the early signs of aging.

"Chelators help your skin topically absorb needed minerals while removing those that are harmful.  Chelators also remove heavy metals that cause your own to form waxy plugs which lead to acne.  By removing the unwanted metals from your skin, this product, albeit, a moisturizer, can clear up acne that has not responded previously to medication prescribed by a doctor."

Change of Seasons Can Bring Havoc On Your Skin...

Change of the seasons can bring havoc on our skin.  Especially in the fall! Have you noticed that during the summer months your skin seems to have a glow and is blemish free? During the summer we all indulge in the warm sun rays and drown ourselves in the delicious summer fruit. The sun and fruit have two very important vitamins that not only our bodies as a whole need but also our skin. Vitamin D and Vitamin C are very important for the elasticity, collagen makeup and reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Lets talk about Vitamin C first...
The most important role of topical Vitamin C is its powerful function of producing collagen, a protein that gives your skin it's elasticity. As we get older the rate that our body naturally produces collagen significantly reduces and the collagen actually breaks down.  Vitamin C helps put our skin into overdrive to produce collagen. Who does not want to counteract the wrinkle formation? Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant. What does that mean to you and your skin? It means it can reverse age and sun related damage to the skin. Remember though, Vitamin C is not replacement for sunscreen, it can help the sunscreen protect and repair UV damage.
Applying vitamin C to the skin can be 20 times more effective than taking it orally to target the signs of aging.

Now on to Vitamin D...
For recent years the sun has been getting a bad rap. Now it is true that you need to protect yourself and wear sunscreen when out in the sun, however a little sun is actually healthy for you. Our body does not make Vitamin D but it does have the properties to make Vitamin D with the correct help. The sun does this for our bodies. This is why we look glowing and radiant in the summer. The benefits of Vitamin D for the skin varies from appearance, elasticity, hydration and minimizes the appearance of pores. Vitamin D is packed with antioxidants that helps fight the signs of aging and fine lines. So how do we get enough Vitamin D in the off season?  Topically adding Vitamin D to your skincare regimen will do the trick!

Chemical Peels and Vitamin C Peels...
Chemical and Vitamin C Peels help penetrate the skin at its epidermis level pushing the sebum, collagen and elasticity into overdrive. The average skin cell turnover rate is 21-28 days. As we age that rate slows. Peels help to speed up that process again.  Here at Faces Beautiful we perform the Chemical Peel and Vitamin C Peel for anyone looking to refresh and rejuvenate their skin. Peels can be preformed on any skin type including sensitive. they can actually act as a preventative to problematic skin. As the seasons change so does our skin. It can become dryer, problematic, oily and/or more sensitive. The word "chemical" tends to scare people away from peels however the "chemicals" that are in peels are actually naturally derived. Glycolic peels are derived from sugar cane, Lactic peels are derived from sour milk , Salicylic peels from wintergreen and Vitamin C peels well they are based on vitamin C. It is highly suggested to do peels in a series to see the best and most effective results. Think of it as working out at the gym! One treatment can exfoliate, hydrate and add a luminous glow and help with the appearance if fine lines. A series can help reverse sun damage, wrinkles and keep that luminous glow going on and on! There is no "down" time to a peel.

Vitamin D serum...
Lets face it, in fall and winter our sun exposure haunts almost to a nonexistent level. Our fresh glow goes away, we lose color, we notice more wrinkles and fine lines. We notice that we us more makeup to add color, luminosity, and a fresh dew look. Full of reparative antioxidants and botanicals, this serum improves the appearance of your skins elasticity and hydration in just one application!

How can we keep the healthy skin from the summer throughout the rough winter and weather changes? Chemical peels and Dr Dennis Gross Vitamin D Serum are the answers to your questions! The two together work wonders and will make you look and feel healthy and beautiful again. Think of them as ying and yang to each other to give perfect harmony to your skin.

Here are Faces Beautiful that is our number one goal, to make you feel beautiful and healthy. Remember beauty comes from within and we can help bring your natural beauty to the surface!

Brush-On Liquid Mineral Makeup

Makeup shouldn't be a chore.

So often we neglect our makeup routines, not for lack of love, but for lack of time to dedicate to the effort necessary to execute them.

The worst offender? Foundation.

Foundation is the problem child of the makeup routine because of all of the different components to having your foundation work for you. It has to be the right shade, both in depth and undertone, it has to be the right finish for your skin tone, you have to apply it so that it looks natural instead of caked on or wrong for your face, and it has to be done in a timely fashion - because really, who wants to spend hours doing their makeup everyday?

That's why I created Brush-On Liquid Mineral Makeup, to be a solution to the hassle of foundation everyday.

My Brush-On Liquid Mineral Makeup is easy, it comes in three colors and adjusts to your skin so you don't have to worry too much about matching your color. It also comes with a brush so you just squeeze the tube to apply the product rather than having to get it all over your fingers or another brush.

It's simple and fabulous, and has already won the Bella Beauty Awards. So drop by our studio or order it online at facesbeautiful.com, we hope to see you soon!

The Basics: The Reverse Nude Eye

We're bringing sexy back ladies.

And in the best way possible!

Who has the time to redo their makeup after a long day of work. It's time to go out and the effort should be minimal for the most effortlessly gorgeous look possible.

This makeup look is a great way to take your "Classic Nude Eye" to a more nighttime appropriate look.

For this look you can use the same three shadows you applied for your "Classic Nude Eye" or you can transition to a darker or different color family.

You're going to need:

-Three eyeshadows, a light, medium, and dark shade

-A flat shader brush

-A large flat shader brush

-A smudge brush

First you're going to apply the medium shade from your lashes to your brow bone.

Then you're going to use the large shader to apply your light shade where your medium shade ends and blend inwards towards your nose.

Now take your smudge brush slightly wet and apply the darkest shadow along your lashes, wiggling the brush back and forth. You can do this to your lower lashes too.

Apply mascara and you're done!

A blunder-proof look for going out!

How To: Line Your Eyes

Gail's Method for Applying Eyeliner - defining your eyes and her secret tip for creating thicker looking lashes

Eyeliner is one of the great makeup innovations; it helps emphasize eyes and their color as well as offering a lot of creative potential.

Here at Faces Beautiful, our must-have tools for lining your eyes are:

-A mineral eyeshadow in a color of your choice (Gail recommends Ebony, a black eyeshadow)

-Our angle eye brush

-A drop of water

We prefer using mineral eyeshadow as a liner because it offers a highly pigmented color, as well as incredible precision. And we prefer using it wet because it eliminates the potential for eyeshadow fallout as well as being even more precise than using the eyeshadow dry.

To begin, dip your angle eye brush in a tiny drop of water - don't soak your brush, but ensure that the tip of the brush is damp.

Then dip the brush into the eyeshadow - a short two sided swipe will be sufficient.

Now, where you first touch the brush down will have the most color, so it is best to start in the middle of the eye, just above your pupil, rather than at the inside or outside of your eye because it will create the most contrast with your eye color and bring the color of your eye to the forefront.

To apply the color, touch the brush down just at the lashes and wiggle the brush very gently, depositing color at the roots of the lashes. Continue doing this along the eye with the longest part of the angle pointing towards your nose. This is a great trick because most people can't draw a straight line right off the bat, and focusing the brush against the lash line will ensure that the line you create will be perfectly fitted to your eye. It is also a great trick because the color fills in the spaces between your lashes, making them look fuller.

Once you have this line, you can go about customizing the shape of your eyeliner.

If you choose to do a cat eye, flip the brush so that the longest end is now facing away from your nose. Apply the flick at whatever angle you like best, or, if you aren't familiar with the cat eye, draw a short flick so that if it continued it would extend from the outer most corner of your eye to your brow bone.

Good luck!

The Basics: The Classic Nude Eye

Your peepers draw people in, so let's dress them up!

Though "Classic Nude Eye" brings to mind the idea of champagnes, browns, bronzes, and golds, this eye technique can be done with any trio of colors, just so long as you have a light, medium, and dark color.

For this look you're going to need:

-Three eyeshadows of any color scheme - a light, medium, and dark

-A shader brush for application

-A large shader brush for application and blending

-An angle eye brush for lining your eyes

First you're going to apply the lightest shade from your lashes all the way to your brows.

Then you're going to apply the darkest shade along your lash line as eyeliner (see our post on how to do this here). You can also do this along your bottom lashes.

Next you're going to take the medium color and apply it in a V in the outer corner of your eye, enhancing your natural contour of your brow. Blend it out so there are no harsh lines.

Now is the time to apply liquid or gel eyeliner (should you choose to) as well as mascara.

That is your perfect "Classic Nude Eye"! For pictures and a more detailed step by step, check out Making Faces Beautiful.

Keep gorgeous!

The Faces Beautiful Brush Family!

One could compare applying makeup to painting; they are, on a basic level, very similar.

If you choose to use this comparison, then it makes sense to realize that when you judge the artistry of paintings, no one compares finger paintings to paintings painted with brushes, it’s like comparing apples and oranges, they are just worlds apart.

There just isn’t the same finesse when you use your fingers for makeup application or painting as there is with brushes.

So imagine your face as a blank canvas and let’s discuss the brushes most necessary for you to create a masterpiece on top of your already beautiful framework.

First off is the makeup wedge. This little guy is great for the application and blending of foundation, placement of color, and for contouring. The makeup wedge is also a great tool for cleanup. A very useful tool for makeup application!

Next up is the easily recognizable q-tip. It seems like q-tips have always been around, and though their uses are endless, the use we’re going to talk about in regards to makeup is cleanup. Q-tips are the champions of cleanup. Able to erase mistakes from tiny to large, q-tips are one of the most capable cleanup tools around, far more accurate than your finger wrapped in a tissue.

The lip brush is often overlooked or ignored because it is difficult to carry around, but ours is retractable! Using a lip brush actually uses less lipstick while allowing you to achieve the desired look as well as allowing for a more precise application!

Then we have the spooly brush, which, though it looks like a mascara wand, is in fact for the grooming of brows and to help make the distribution of brow powder more even.

Finally we get to the more professional brushes, the brushes that will give you the ability to create stunning makeup looks. The first up is the angle eye brush. This brush is for filling in brows or for the precise application of shadow and liner. The angle eye brush is critical to achieve the perfect cat eye. An absolute must have!

For smokier eyes, the smudge brush is absolutely perfect. The rounded top of the brush is amazing at smoking out waxy liner or even eyeshadow. A great staple for the fan of the smokey eye! I kiddingly refer to this brush as idiot-proof. Even if you can't make a straight line - it can.

The shader brush is your basic eyeshadow application brush. It has soft, firm bristles that allow for the specific placement of color. This is the most basic, and to some, the most necessary eye brush. All pros have one in their kit!

The large shader brush has a shape very like the shader brush, just enlarged. In comparison, the large shader brushes’ bristles are much less firm, they have more give which makes the large shader brush the perfect brush for either applying a wash of color to the lid or for blending out colors. Another must have eye brush for the makeup enthusiast!

Finally, we have the Faces Beautiful face brush. This is the only brush you’ll ever need to achieve a flawless, glowing finish with your makeup. The face brush is perfect for both color placement and distribution. Its flat top allows for specific placement of bronzer, while fanning out that flat top creates the perfect shape for brushing blush on your cheeks, that is, depending on what face shape you have and how you should blush or bronze accordingly! (for more information, check out our book: Making Faces Beautiful)

Come check out our brushes! They are both online and in store at our studio Faces Beautiful.

We can’t wait to see you!

Eyebrow Asymmetry

It's true; no person is truly symmetrical, so why should your eyebrows be?

Perfectly symmetrical eyebrows look unnatural on your face. This is because the two sides of your face are uneven; you are asymmetrical. For instance, your eyebrow may be higher on your right side than your left, your right eye might be closer to your nose than on your left side.

Here at Faces Beautiful, we recognize that your brows must be tailored to the asymmetry of your face, so we wont lie you down, or have your eyes closed. We'll have you sitting up so we can see where your face falls naturally and assess your asymmetry from there.

From there, we'll tweeze each eyebrow individually to suit your entire face, not just the side of your face it sits on. The result is what looks like naturally perfect brows! Your eyebrows will also be tailored to the shape of your face like we discussed in a previous post: Face Shape and Brow Shapes

Face Shape and Brow Shapes

Creating your brow shape... are you a heart, round, oval, or square?

To get it out of the way, yes, the shape of your face does effect what brow shape will look best on you.

But not to worry, not only are the guidelines simple, if you come in to Faces Beautiful we'll do all the hard work for you!

The simplest way to look at it is that the more angular your face is, the softer and more rounded you want your brows to be. This is so that they don't add to the angular nature of your face shape. The flip side is also true, the more round your face is, the more angled your brows should be to add more definition to your face and bring out your cheekbones.

With that rule in mind, the shapes are easy to figure out.

Square faces are going to need more rounded brows, with less of an arch and a more curved shape.

Round and heart faces are going to need more angular brows, so a stronger arch and a more horizontal or triangular shape is preferred here.

Oval faces have more freedom than the other face shapes, their face shape doesn't lean more round or angular, so their brows depend more on the individual.

Come to Faces Beautiful and let us work it all out for you! Call 203-226-1818 to book your eyebrow shaping today. You'll be so happy that you did!

Tweezing vs. Waxing: Why We Tweeze

To tweeze, or to wax...?

For any woman who gets her brows done, there is always the lingering question of which method is the best.

The most popular methods are tweezing and waxing.

Both are incredibly popular methods, with huge support behind them, and though each person has their own preference and is more than entitled to it, here at Faces Beautiful, our preference is definitely tweezing.

The reason we prefer tweezing boils down to three main reasons:

1. More Precision

2. Skin Safety

3. Less Pain

First, tweezing is more precise. There are no ifs ands or buts about it. Waxing as a procedure removes sections of hair, meaning that while it can create the shape best for your face, it is difficult to individualize your brows to your face. Tweezing allows one or two hairs to be removed, meaning that it is easier to create brows specific to a face rather than a face shape, allowing the arch to better accentuate cheek bones, or eye shape.

Secondly, wax is much more harsh on the skin. Today so many products contain retin-A or retinol ingredients, which are great for treating aging concerns and acne but unfortunately when combined with wax, the wax causes the skin to rip and burn, creating scarring. So as you know, we're all about the skin looking its most beautiful, which means we are believers in anti-aging ingredients, which eliminates you as a candidate for waxing. Tweezing is specific to removing each hair from it's follicle, so it never touches the skin, meaning that it will not cause irritation when used in combination with anti-aging ingredients and treatments that are already being used.

Thirdly, the main concern that people have with tweezing is pain, but when done correctly, which of course we do, tweezing shouldn’t cause any pain; instead the hair should simply slip out. Proper tweezing isn’t a yanking motion; it is gently pulling the hair out.

We chose to tweeze at Faces Beautiful because it allows much more artistry, and we believe that having the proper brow shape not only for your face shape, but also for your individual face, is one of the most simple but incredible ways we can help you feel your most beautiful.

For more information on tweezing and other beauty secrets, check out Making Faces Beautiful, Gail's new book!

How To: Fill In Your Brows

Want Gorgeous Eyebrows? Fill them in!

Filling in your eyebrows. At some point, every woman who battles with sparse or very light eyebrows has dealt with this issue. How do you do it? What are the best tools to do it with?

Here at Faces Beautiful we prefer using a powder to fill in your brows, as opposed to a gel or a pencil just for the natural look it gives.

For us, the essential tools for filling in your brows are:

-At least one, if not two mineral eyeshadows or brow powders

-A drop of water

Most important to note is that the powder you are filling in your eyebrows with, regardless of whether it’s an eyeshadow or a brow powder should be lighter than your brows. This is because using a shade darker than your natural brows can cause them to look too dark and harsh for your face, where as a lighter shade will simply create the illusion that your brows are thicker or more prominent than they may be naturally.

First off, you are going to dip your angle eye brush in the drop of water, just enough for the tip to be damp, but not so much that it is soaked, and then dip it in the powder.

Now, where ever you place the brush first will wind up being the darkest, so choose wisely. Our favorite spot to start is at the peak of your arch.

Feather the brush across your brows, filling them in as you go. As you feather, take the spooly and comb through your eyebrows, this will better disperse the powder and even out the color so your brows don’t look patchy or like you have gradient brows.

Continue filling in your brows until they are as full in appearance as you want them.

Voila! Vogue worthy brows!

If your brow shape isn’t to your liking, call us at 203-226-1818 and book an appointment! We’ll give you your perfect shape and give you a lesson on how to fill them!
